By Christy Bailey-Tomecek - September 14, 2020

Congratulations to Anna Machcewicz on the publication of her new book! Civility in Uncivil Times: Kazimierz Moczarski's Quiet Battle for Truth, from the Polish Underground to Stalinist Prison recounts the life of journalist, soldier, and political prisoner Kazimierz Moczarski. Moczarski fought for law and democracy in the authoritarian Poland of the 1930s. During the Second World War, he joined the resistance movement. After the war, he spent eleven years in a Stalinist prison, including nine months in one cell with the Nazi Jürgen Stroop, who commanded the brutal subjugation of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. After he was freed from prison, he wrote about meeting Stroop in Conversations with the Executioner. Machcewicz was a 2020 William Rosenberg Senior Scholar at the Fortunoff Archive.
