TJHTalks – Jewish Encounters in the Coffeehouse

By Christy Bailey-Tomecek - January 12, 2021

On January 13, 2021 at 2:00 PM EST, please join the latest TJHTalk session, "Jewish Encounters in the Coffeehouse." In this presentation, Professor Shachar Pinsker and Professor Marci Shore will be discussing Pinsker's book A Rich Brew: How Cafés Created Modern Jewish Culture. Pinsker explores how the milieu of the café played a critical role in the transition into modernity, creating spaces for residents and newcomers to meet and exchange ideas, often inspiring new literary works and cultural trends. Shore also considers café culture in her book, Caviar and Ashes: A Warsaw Generation’s Life and Death in Marxism, 1918-1968. She introduces the young avant-garde poets of the early 1920s who became radical Marxists by the end of the decade. They often met in Warsaw’s Café Ziemiańska, a venue that has a prominent role in Pinsker's book. Shore is a member of the Fortunoff Archive's advisory board. The talk will be moderated by Edward Serotta
