Fortunoff Archive cooperation with Yung Yidish Wien
YUNG YiDiSH WIEN (YYW) is a unique meeting space for Yiddish language and culture in Vienna's 2nd District, the 'Matses Insel,' bringing together Yiddish speaking Hasidic speakers, Yiddish enthusiasts and the general public interested in Eastern Central European Jewish culture. YYW is building a library of Yiddish books, which serve as testament to a thousand-year-old European history of a people. YYW provides an intimate space where language and culture can be transmitted to the next generation, thereby contributing to the continuity of Jewish cultural life in Vienna.
The Fortunoff Video Archive's cooperation with YYW is based in a shared understanding that Yiddish language and culture is intimately tied to the memories of the Holocaust and the strong conviction that the task of every generation, so ours too, is to transmit the traces of this culture to the next generation. Together, YYW and Fortunoff Archive have organized academic lectures in English and Yiddish on different aspects of the history of the Holocaust, as well as hosted several concerts featuring Yiddish songs from the archive's testimonies.
